If you have wavy hair and want to start styling your natural pattern, welcome. You are about to begin a fun process of learning what your hair responds to and what throws it off, and over time, you will build a wavy hair routine that truly fits.
My hair sits somewhere between wavy and curly, with clear spirals that loop around themselves but still stretch into a looser ringlet. Because it behaves like wavy hair in some important ways, I am in a solid position to guide you through building a wavy routine.
It usually takes some testing to find the products that work well every time, so if you are styling natural waves for the first time, you will probably need a little trial and error. Still, here is a guide that has worked well for me when building a wavy hair routine, from oiling to styling product picks, while helping you avoid the time and heat stress that come with straighteners. Let’s get into it.
Key Takeaways
-
Wavy hair routines usually work best when hydration supports definition without adding too much weight.
-
Hair masks and leave-in conditioner may help improve softness, shine, and wave control.
-
Gentle drying with microfiber fabric or air drying can help reduce frizz and breakage.
-
Curl cream and diffusing may support wave shape, hold, and smoother definition.
Step 1: Build Your Routine Around Hydration

Summer sun, salt water, and chlorine can leave wavy hair feeling dry and more difficult to handle. Hydration sits at the center of a strong wavy hair routine, but the key is keeping that moisture balanced.
If your hair is fine to medium, aim for moisture without too much weight. Start with a lightweight shampoo, then follow with products that help shape your waves without pulling them flat. A small amount of Keyoma’s 100% Pure Batana Oil with Rosemary may help nourish dry lengths and add softness while letting your natural movement stay intact.
If your waves are color-treated or a little damaged, like mine, starting with a strengthening treatment can noticeably improve definition. It helps support the hair structure while still encouraging bounce, shape, and movement.
Step 2: Incorporating a Hair Mask

Once or twice each week, I also work in a hair mask to give my strands a stronger dose of hydration, which usually leaves them looking glossier too. I have been using DIY hair masks with pure batana oil to help revive hair from deeper within the cuticle.
This goes on after shampoo and before conditioner, so I apply a generous amount from the mid-lengths to the ends, plus just a tiny bit near the roots, then leave it in for about three minutes.
Step 3: Reach for a Leave-In Conditioner

Next comes conditioner, which is essential for waves. The formula you choose depends a lot on how thick or dry your strands are and how much moisture they usually need, which you probably already have a decent feel for by now.
As a general guide, very thirsty, porous, and thick hair can usually handle richer, heavier formulas. If your hair is finer, does not get especially dry, or tends to turn static-y, a lighter conditioner often works better. My usual test is simple: if my hair still feels straw-like after rinsing, the formula was not moisturizing enough.
Step 4: Dry Your Hair with Care

Long hair is often more fragile when wet, which means the way you dry it matters a lot. Instead of towel-drying, which can be rough and wear down the strands, try gently scrunching your hair with a soft microfiber towel or even a cotton T-shirt to help keep your waves intact.
Even though plenty of us grew up hearing otherwise, going to sleep with wet hair probably will not give you a cold, but it can lead to extra breakage and flatten those more delicate waves.
I noticed my waves held better when I let them dry fully before bed. It is better to let your hair dry completely, either with a diffuser on low heat or by air drying, before you go to sleep if you want smoother, better-formed waves.
Step 5: Brushing and Detangling

Once my strands are dry enough that they are no longer dripping, I divide my hair into two sections and use a wet brush to remove any tangles. I find that the separated bristles are firm but flexible enough to avoid pulling or tearing, while still doing a good job of smoothing everything out and working through knots.
Step 6: Add a Curl Cream

I have not yet met a curly or wavy-haired person who relies on only one styling product, and I am no different. This step helps keep the definition smooth and adds hold before I scrunch in the next product to bring out the full shape of each curl. These are usually lighter formulas intended for looser textures, such as type 3A to 3C hair, so keep that in mind if your curls are tighter.
Step 7: Diffuse

If I am styling my hair naturally, I always dry it with a diffuser. If you have not met yet, this dryer attachment spreads the airflow over a wider area so it stays gentler, which helps protect your curl pattern and cuts down on extra frizz. I hover the dryer around my head and gently shift sections so I can dry the roots from different angles. Shop some of our favorite diffusers here.
Shape Wavy Hair Routine for Softer Definition
Use pure batana oil when your waves need extra softness without losing their natural movement. Wavy hair often sits in a tricky middle space, where too little moisture leaves frizz behind, but too much can flatten the shape you are trying to keep.
Using a hair mask once or twice a week can give dry strands extra hydration while keeping the routine controlled. The goal is not to force your waves into place, but to help them stay defined, glossy, and easier to style with less heat. When your waves start feeling dry or unpredictable, richer nourishment can make the whole routine feel steadier.
